Benjamin L. Smith
Atmospheric mysteries, uncanny places, and crimes that refuse ordinary explanations.
Benjamin L. Smith writes about the places where reason stops being enough. His fiction sits at the intersection of mystery, supernatural suspense, Gothic fiction and the uncanny, combining grounded characters with crimes, histories and discoveries that resist ordinary explanation. He is the author of The Shadow Casebooks, an ongoing supernatural mystery series featuring Greg Lawrence, Emma Colbeck and Marcus Tremane. Beginning with The House of Cain and continuing through The Key of Angels, The Veiled Past and The Huntsman’s Due, the series blends crime, forensic investigation, folklore, Gothic suspense and genuine supernatural danger. His second body of work, The Other Places, explores a different kind of unease. Each novel stands alone, built around strange locations, unexplained events and people attempting to understand situations that do not quite obey the rules they expect. Across both worlds, Benjamin is drawn to folklore, buried history, human loyalty, guilt, consequence and the uncomfortable possibility that the rational explanation may be correct without being complete. His stories are less interested in explaining away the impossible than in asking what people do once the evidence becomes impossible to ignore. He lives, writes and occasionally argues with fictional people in the United Kingdom.
